Message	connections (such as search page, member list, online users, etc) you'd see the amount of resources needed to process that page drop down by 800%+, no exaggeration, that's how bad it is. It doesn't matter if the site will stop going down completely - if the site is improved, it helps heavily on everything without anyone even knowing a thing has changed. Think of it like 2.5" piping - why not do it if someone's offering it for free?
